Characterised by Majestic timing and placement, Saeed Anwar was an opener of the highest class. The little left hander was always a treat to watch blessed with a great eye and an uncanny ability to find the gaps in the field. The wristiness of his strokeplay just added to the delight of the eyes.

Saeed Anwar still holds the world record for the highest score ever in a one day International. His amazing knock of 194 against India at Chennai surpassed the score of 189 previously held by the great Viv Richards in an innings in which he showed under testing conditions that he had the footwork, timing and most of all, the heart for a fight.

17 of Saeed's 20 ODI hundreds came outside of Pakistan and his record of almost 9000 ODI runs at an average of just under 40 bears testimony to him being Pakistan's finest ever ODI opener.

Anwar scored 20 ODI hundreds - a Pakistani record - and that too at a world record rate. He was also a man for the big occasion; he scored plenty a runs in The two World Cups he played in and when it came time to hang his boots, he finished off his career in the most majestic manner by making a century against 'The Old Enemy.' But perhaps his best ability was that once set at the crease, he would make you pay - especially if you were India!!

It is in test match cricket though where a player shows his real metal. Anwar was not found wanting, but with over 4000 test runs at an average of 45, his class shone through. His career highlight innings also came against the Indians as he carried his bat and helped Pakistan to win ensuite to his 188 n/o in Calcutta. Unsurprisingly Anwar showed his class as an opener being able to not only adapt his game to different bowlers but also conditions; 7 of his 11 test centuries came abroad and his average remained the same away as it was playing at home. The true mark of a great opener....

Saeed Anwar will always be remembered as one of the finest batsman that have played the game and we here at the Pakistan Cricket World salute his services to Pakistan Cricket!
